TEMPO InteractiveJakarta:President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has acknowledged human rights violations in Papua committed by military personnel. He stressed that the perpetrators will be legally processed.

“The military and the police will be penalized. Justice will be served. We will hold a military trial there,” the president told foreign representatives at the Foreign Department yesterday.

He said the violation had been managed by penalizing those responsible.

The president said the Indonesian government was trying to be transparent in the case.

“We don’t want any repressive action from the Indonesian military or the police when doing their job there,” he said. “We will do this openly,” said SBY, while calling on foreign representatives to immediately report any violations committed by military personnel or the police.

Nevertheless, he stressed that the military and the police in Papua were there to maintain security and were not part of a military operation. “They are doing this because the world must know there is still a separatist movement in Papua. These separatist attacks, said the president, have killed police officers and local people.
